A Möbius Strip:
One Year Around the Sound
Oscar is a twenty-something dishwasher in
Coupeville, Washington until Möbius the Magician and the
Cyclone Cycle Sideshow get to town during a spring
festival. Driven by his attraction to Rachel Rush, the
sideshow’s fortuneteller, Oscar hits the road with the
troupe, joining them as puppeteer on their ten-week bicycle
tour of the Puget Sound region.
Seattle, Bainbridge Island, Port Townsend and Port Angeles,
Victoria B.C., The San Juan Islands, Bellingham,
Anacortes—none are spared in the Sideshow’s romp around
northwest Washington State.
Beginning in the spring of 1999, the novel traces one year
in Oscar’s life, a year in which the WTO protests in
Seattle, the turn of the Millennium, and the Kingdome
implosion all make guest appearances as the book takes a
critical look at American culture at a turning point. All
the frenzy of life on the edge is thrown into quiet
contrast by idyllic months in the San Juan Islands where
Oscar ends up after the tour.
Full of colorful characters like Sancho the Jumping Bean
and Gravity the Dwarf, the book is many things: a Puget
Sound bicycle travelogue, a love story, a tragedy, nature
writing, cultural commentary, and green fiction. All the
hype surrounding the impending new millennium backdrops
Oscar’s emotional coming of age, while providing a vehicle
for mad Möbius’ philosophies on the future, technology,
gravity, fate, aliens, mutation, myth, religion,
apocalypse, time, love, truth, art, dreams, drugs, limbo,
the universe, and magic.
